Wharton Hardware’s Pennsauken, New Jersey location is our oldest location. This is where Vittorio Magistrelli, a Philadelphia contractor and native of Lucca, Italy, opened his first hardware store in 1948. The store was opened in an old one room schoolhouse at the corner of Route 130 and Union Avenue. The name “Wharton” came from the street he lived on in South Philadelphia.
Dealing mostly in World War II surplus, much it sourced from post war auctions at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in the early days, Wharton grew steadily to become one of the main suppliers to the Philadelphia / South Jersey contractor market.
Four generations later, Wharton is still owned and operated by the Magistrelli family. The wood floors of the retail counter are original from the old schoolhouse. Our Pennsauken location, like our relentless dedication to customer service, has never changed.
